Calverton Teacher is Bound for the BSO
Posted 02/02/2010 11:44AM

Calverton’s Lower School Orchestra Teacher Alicia Moskaitis will join the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) on stage this week at the Music Center at Strathmore. “Miss Alicia,” as she is known to Calverton’s Lower School students, is part of a select group of amateur musicians chosen to perform the fourth movement from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 with the BSO on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 and Thursday, February 4, 2010.

Moskaitis has been playing the violin since age 5, and is thrilled to be joining the BSO for this special event. “I’ve seen the BSO perform, and I’ll admit – I’ve been a little jealous watching them! I remember thinking, ‘I’d love to be up there with them. I’d love to be right there, on that stage.’”

This week, Moskaitis gets a chance to live her dream. Moskaitis applied for the honor of joining the world-renowned orchestra through a program called “Rusty Musicians with the BSO.” It was created by BSO Music Director Marin Alsop in keeping with the BSO’s vision to increase the community’s involvement in music and serve as a cultural resource for the Baltimore-Washington region.

Since joining the BSO, Alsop has worked to “tear down the walls” that separate performers and their audiences. This week, though, Alsop has managed to do much more than that. For Moskaitis and her fellow “rusty musicians,” the only thing separating them from Alsop will be a few square feet of stage in Strathmore’s beautiful concert hall.

Tickets for the concerts are $10 general admission and can be purchased through the BSO Ticket Office, 877.BSO.1444, 410.783.8000 or BSOmusic.org. Moskaitis is part of the group that will perform on Thursday, February 4 at 9 p.m.
