FIFTH GRADE AT CALVERTON
Students in Calverton's
fifth grade continue to explore the subjects that shape and
surround
the world
in which they live. An important aspect of Calverton’s
fifth grade is the development of responsibility and community
awareness
through the Student Leadership Forum. Early in the year students
participate in a week of day trips and activities that focus
on leadership skills and cooperative teamwork. Throughout
the school year, fifth grade students organize monthly Spirit
Assemblies
involving the entire lower school. Math studies focus on the reinforcement, refinement, and expansion
of basic skills, while successfully preparing for higher level
multiplication and division. Additionally, students cover all
skills necessary for proper test taking.
Science studies concentrate on light and sound, D.A.R.E.,
a study of the Chesapeake Bay, and the laws governing weather
patterns.
While studying writing, special emphasis is placed on grammatical
skills and the incorporation of new techniques in writing.
Some writing projects include poetry, short stories, letters,
and research reports.
Fifth grade literature study emphasizes literary analysis,
literary technique, and transference to student writing. In
addition to other works, students will read:
The View from Saturday
(multicultural)
Bud, not Buddy
(multicultural, historical fiction)
The Secret of Heron Creek
Oyster Moon
(historical fiction of the Chesapeake Bay)
Anne of Green Gables
(fiction)
Where the Red Fern Grows
Brian's Winter
Sign of the Beaver
(independent guided reading)
The social studies program focuses on meaningful learning
through the study of ancient America, world explorers, American
history, and the history and geography of the Chesapeake Bay.
