"It must
be remembered that the purpose of education is not to fill the minds
of students with facts - it is to teach them to think - and always
to think for themselves." - Robert Hutchins
Thinking and writing are at the very core of the Fourth Grade curriculum
at The Calverton School. Classroom lessons center around discussion
topics in which students are encouraged to pose questions for their
fellow students as well as for their teacher, explain their thoughts
and opinions, probe for additional information, and seek alternative
solutions. Our students are expected to be actively involved in
their own learning processes. They understand that their classroom
is a safe and encouraging learning center where they gather to reinforce
and extend previously learned skills, explore and discover new ideas
and concepts, and reflect on their own thinking.
