SECOND GRADE AT CALVERTON

Creativity
Independence
Self-evaluation
Thinking Skills
Respect
Compassion

These are important tenets
of second grade at
The Calverton School.

In our Language Arts program, the children continue to develop their reading, writing, and thinking skills. The reading program emphasizes phonics, comprehension, genre, word analysis, vocabulary development, syntax, and critical thinking skills utilizing a variety of oral and written activities done both independently and cooperatively. Trade books are used to expand creativity and enhance cross-curricular learning. In second grade we progress from learning to read, to reading to learn.

The second grade math program continues to foster student confidence in mathematics by giving the students opportunities to be active participants in cooperative and individual learning tasks.   Students are encouraged to explore, memorize, predict, explain, reason, discuss, justify, and solve as they manipulate, imagine, compute, and brainstorm.

Another integral part of the second grade curriculum is our immersion into the cultures of four different countries - Kenya, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Japan.  Studying life on three different continents is indeed an adventure!  (Check out our photo scrapbook by clicking on the TeacherWeb link at the top of this page.)

Each school day is full of information and activity for this community of learners.  Come and visit - watch the growth unfold!
