Dear Middle School Families,

I hope that you are enjoying the long weekend. Excitement is in the air, and I can sense the energy all the students are bringing into finals and the end of the year.

Happening this Week:

May 26 – Memorial Day, No School
May 30 – Field Day, 2 hour early dismissal, 1:20pm. NO Study Hall

Spring Arts Showcase:

We are excited to end the year with two Spring Arts Showcase events held on Monday, 6/2 and Wednesday, 6/4. These events will happen during the school day and will also be recorded and shared out after the performances.

Monday 6/2 from 2:25-3:20

On Monday, we will showcase our large ensembles including Middle School Band, Upper School Band, Upper School Music Elective, Middle School Choir, Middle School Keyboard/Strings Elective, and Middle School Rock Band.

Wednesday 6/4 from 1:25-2:20

On Wednesday, we will showcase solo and small ensemble works, visual arts students in Middle and Upper School, and the Middle School Rock Band Digital Music Projects. We will include work in the show that is ready to be performed - students, please check in with Dr. Sturrock or Dr. Crissman on your solo to see if it is prepared to the level needed to be included in the performance.

Upcoming:

June 2 and June 4 – final Coffee Houses of the year for our performers!
June 5 - 6th and 7th grade end of year trip. Party at the Bowling Alley!
June 9 – 8th grade trip to Kings Dominion.
June 9 – 5th grade recognition, Moving up to Middle School Event

Dear Middle School families,

I would like to thank all the parents and the CPA for making this past week so special for our teachers. The week was full of rainbows and sunshine, and teachers truly felt the appreciation. Middle school had a great time at the final dance of the year, and I thank you for sharing your children with us, it is really fun to see them enjoying their time together outside of class! The next few weeks will be busy, but there is much to look forward to.

Dear Middle School Families,

We are wrapping up an exciting week. Thank you so much to our CPA and parent volunteers for an awesome fiesta luncheon for Middle and Upper School students. Truly everyone looks forward to this, and the level of dedication to making this a community event is appreciated.

To our students, thank you for your hard work on Earth Day, and we hope that you had some fun as well. The 8th grade students that went off campus to help with much needed beautification at the Arc of Southern MD. The staff was so grateful for their help and positive attitudes. We hope to continue this partnership for years to come.

Additionally, students had the opportunity to decorate reusable grocery bags that were given to local farmers markets. We received the following note:

“Thank you very much for the Earth Day reusable tote bags for the farmers markets, they’re definitely appreciated. 60 were handed out today at the North Beach market and 45 will be handed out on Tuesday at the CalvertHealth market. The students’ creativity and talent is remarkable; I’m glad they are able to share their vision.”

Finally, a huge thank you to everyone involved with the Calverton Auction. This was an amazing event last night that exceeded our expectations. We were so honored to have Kaitlyn Croker there to perform, and even more thrilled that she spent Friday afternoon with aspiring musicians at Calverton to talk about her journey and the process she uses to create and share music.

Student Check-ins:

Middle School Advisors will be having students check their grades every Fridays in advisory and working with them to make sure any missings are being completed and that they are on track to finish the year strong.
As we head into the last 6.5 weeks of school, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teachers and/or advisors if there are any questions.

Dear Middle School families,

I hope that you are having a wonderful weekend as we are starting to see some warmer weather and maybe some sunshine! This past Friday, our Calverton 8th grade had their lock-in which is part of the annual traditions as they get closer to completing Middle School! Thank you so much to the parents that helped to coordinate and chaperone, and a big thank you to Mrs. Tayman for staying overnight! It is events like this that remind me of what a special bond is formed between classmates. Please see below for information on this week and what is coming up.

Upcoming:

April 22, Earth Day! Calverton students will be doing projects around campus and in the community to celebrate, rejuvenate, and appreciate the Earth!
- 8th grade students will head to the Arc of Southern Maryland to help beautify and maintain their property. The Arc is the leading advocate for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities living and working in Southern Maryland. This is a unique opportunity to make a difference in the larger community.
- 6th and 7th grade will be participating in activities around campus, and all students will take part in a cookout and games in the afternoon.

Dear Middle School families,

Welcome back to our final quarter of the 24/25 school year! In my experience, this is the time of year that just flies by between Field Day, Field Trips, and that final push in classes! I am so excited to spend spring with these students. Here is what you need to know as we begin 4th quarter.

Happening this week:

The AIMS visiting team is here! We have been working on our school accreditation for a year now, and the final pieces will be put into place this week as faculty and administration from other AIMS schools visit to help us visualize our next steps as a school.
3rd quarter Report cards will be available in FACTS the afternoon of Friday, April 4. This is a progress report, which means that the gradebook stays open and students still have an opportunity to make adjustments as needed before the end of the semester.

Dear Middle School Families,

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend and remembered to “spring forward”. I would like to take a moment to congratulate the cast and crew of The Addams Family on a fabulous opening weekend (just one assembly left to go). This was such a fun show that the audience loved! Thank you to Dr. Crissman, Dr. Sturrock, Mrs. Crissman, Mrs. Trott, and Mrs. Gallagher for their work in bringing this together during our elective time. Additionally, congratulations to our middle school students that competed in Science, History, and Geography Bees this weekend. Thank you to Dr. Treatman-Clark for preparing our students for this fun event. Check out our social media soon to see the final outcome of who made it to the National level of competition.

Happening this week:

March 10: Lower School Assembly of The Addams Family, 1pm.
March 12: Spring Sip n Dip! Please see attached flier for more information. We are so grateful to the CPA for providing this fun event for our students, faculty and staff.
March 14: Research Expo at 2pm in the Commons. We encourage all families to attend if able. Seeing the results of the students’ hard work is so rewarding!
- Please make sure to get your tri-fold board for your presentation. Maximum size of 36” x 48”. The key is that it will be able to stand up on its own as they will be set up on tables in the Commons and surrounding classrooms.

March 15: MathCounts State Competition. Please join me in wishing Tigran Krbashyan the best of luck as he competes at the state level for his THIRD time. This is an incredible accomplishment, and we are proud of his hard work.

Upcoming events:

March 17th – Dr. Venera Miller will be our special guest speaker on the topics of mental health and substance abuse. These assemblies will have middle and upper school separately to address these topics and appropriate levels.
March 18: PSAT 8/9 for 7th and 8th grade. Students will be installing BlueBook on their devices. We will be doing this at school, but if any student is unable to install it on their device, we will work with IT to get a school device for the exam.

March 21 - half day, 12:20p dismissal; buses at 12:35p.
March 24 - 31 Happy Spring Break!

Dear Middle School Families,

February is flying by, and here we are in our last week. Research Expo on March 14 will mark the end of our 2nd session of electives. The first week of March a new form will be sent for students to select their 3rd session of electives. If any parents are interested in offering an elective option to the middle school students, please let me know. Here is what you need to know now!

Happening this week:

February 24 – MS/US assemblies by Samantha Lord, Calverton Alumni.
1. Samantha recently published a book called “Finding Life’s Blessings: A Journey of Hardship, Healing, and Hope”. She will be sharing things she’s learned along the way and her experience writing.
February 25 – Winter Athletic Awards at 2pm in the theater.
February 25 – Calverton Parents Athletic Committee will host an Athlete Appreciation Event in the gym from 3:30 – 4:30pm. Please see attached flier. Thank you!
February 28 – Hoops for Heart with Mr. C!

Happening This Week:

Monday, February 10: Our celebration of Black History Month continues with a Kahoot! Game that has been created by our US Kaleidoscope club that will be played in advisory.
Monday, February 10 and Tuesday, February 11: 6th (2/10) and 7th (2/11) grades will head to the Prince Frederick library to learn research skills for research expo. They will depart at 9am and return around 12pm during recess.
1. Students will have the option to purchase lunch at Panera or Five Guys after the library. They may also bring lunch or eat when they return to campus. Please see Mrs. Tayman’s email from last week for more details.
Thursday, February 13: NHS Candy Grams delivered.
Friday, February 14: No School, winter break.

- New this year, we will be adding an IB information session at 6:15pm in the theater for any family that would like to learn more about this program.

February 5 – No school for students, parent-teacher conferences.
February 6 – All School Pep Rally in Support of our Senior Night Games! Pep Rally will take place during school hours, but we invite everyone to attend the games!
February 7, to kickoff Black History Month, Kaleidoscope Club has put together an assembly presentation that will be shared with all divisions throughout the week. Stay tuned to Social Media and upcoming events for more on how we are recognizing Black History Month.

Friday, January 31, is a Half Day:

Middle school will dismiss at 12:20pm. There will be no lunch and no after school study hall this day.
- Busses will depart at 12:35pm
Please see the email from Adrienne Forgette, sent Saturday, January 25, for all the details.
The Blooms will be honoring the life of Carter Bloom this afternoon, and school will be closed so that any faculty/staff or families that would like to attend may.

Valentine’s Candy Grams:

These will be on sale through the NHS starting this week for delivery February 13.
Please see attached flier for more information. Candy Grams are $7.

Celebrate the Lunar New Year:

February 1, 4 - 7pm, the US Chinese Culture Club will be hosting a Lunar New Year Celebration in the Residential Village.
Open to faculty and staff, students and their familes.
Bring a dish or drinks to share and your appetite!

Dear Middle School families,

I hope everyone has stayed safe and warm over that past, what a wild way to start the year. It was wonderful to see students on Thursday and Friday, and they seemed happy to be back into a routine of sorts! I would also like to say THANK YOU to all the middle school families for my lovely holiday gift. I really appreciate the relaxation set, and it is already going to good use! Here are a few notes as we head into what will hopefully be a full week of school!

January 17 - End of Semester 1. The gradebooks close at this point and grades start fresh for semester 2.

Winter Fun with Cotillion:

Our very own Frauke Bowen is the Chairwoman for JDW Cotillion held at the Cannon Club in Lothian. This is a wonderful social activity for Middle School Students.

Middle School Buddies:

Typically middle school buddies takes place the first Monday of each month. As we are off tomorrow, we have shifted buddies to next Monday, January 13. Our middle schoolers will head to lower school to play Winter Bingo!

Research Expo:

Prior to break, all middle school students began exploring topics that they are interested in for their Research Expo. With their RE advisor, they learned what a good research question looks like (cannot just be answered with yes or no, etc), and began to narrow down their topic and question of choice. Our objective is to teach research, writing, and presentation skills that will be necessary for their academic careers and beyond and have found this most effective when they are excited about the topic!
Stay tuned for more detailed information about objectives and deadlines for Research Expo.

IB Learner Profile - Caring:

To look after things, people, and the world around us.
During the months of November and December, advisories have been exploring this IB learner characteristic through our End Hunger Drive, Veteran's Day activities, and this week through an advisory service activity.
December 2 and 3 MS will make “no sew blankets” for the Calvert Foster Care Closet, Project Echo and holiday cards for the Calvert Nursing Home during their Study Hall and Advisory time.

You are invited!:

Students will share music and art during two Winter Arts Showcases in December. Friday, December 13 will feature middle and upper school students in solo and small ensemble performances, and Monday, December 16 will feature music ensembles and visual art. Each of the events will take place during the school day at 2:30 in the theater, and parents are invited. We hope to see you there!

Upcoming:

December 9, MathCounts School Competition
December 11, Middle School Sip n Dip. This fun event, hosted by the CPA, includes donuts, hot chocolate, and a chance to spend time with friends! This year, the 5th grade will be joining our middle school for the festivities.
December 14-15, Robotics Competition (separate email will be sent our to those students involved)
December 20, Early Dismissal at 12:20pm. This half day, students will enjoy advisory breakfast and competitions before heading out for winter break.
December 21 - January 5 Winter Break.

Good evening 6th grade families, I hope you all have had a wonderful weekend as we head into the home stretch before Thanksgiving Break. While there is are a few thing to share, of utmost importance is that we have our NEW elective classes set for next session, beginning December 2. 6th grade will be having Health with Ms. Duff on Tuesdays and Research Expo on Thursdays. Save the date of March 14 for Research Expo at 2:30pm (More details to come). You can see the new elective form here. Please fill out the elective form by this Friday, 11/22. Good evening 7th and 8th grade families, I hope you all have had a wonderful weekend as we head into the home stretch before Thanksgiving Break.

This week in the Middle School:

November 8 - Fall Athletics Awards 2:15 - 3:20pm followed by an Athlete Appreciation Gathering in the gym (please see attached flyer)
November 8 - MS Fall Dance!!! 6 - 8 p.m. in the Commons. If students are unable to leave and come back, they may check into Study Hall in the Upper School Library until the dance starts.
The Middle School SGA will be hosting a Harvest Dance to benefit End Hunger. Admission to the dance is for non-perishable food items. Homerooms will compete to see which class collects the most full-size items the night of the dance. The winning class will receive a donut party. Pizza ($2), drinks ($1) and chips ($1)will be for sale at the dance with proceeds being used to help purchase items for fall service learning and gratitude projects.
Students should wear their favorite fall outfits.

If your child is absent, arriving late, or leaving early, please send the details to Emilee Racer, eracer@calvertonschool.org, and she will make sure the details are sent out to the appropriate teachers. Ms. Racer's desk in the office just inside the upper school entrance is also where you can sign your child in and out.
