Dear Upper School Families,

I hope that you are enjoying the long weekend. Excitement is in the air, and I can sense the energy all the students are bringing into finals and the end of the year.

Happening this Week:

May 26 – Memorial Day, No School
May 27 – 29th – 11th grade Chesapeake Bay Foundation overnight field trip to Port Isobel Island.
May 30 – Field Day, 2 hour early dismissal, 1:20pm. NO Study Hall

Spring Arts Showcase:

We are excited to end the year with two Spring Arts Showcase events held on Monday, 6/2 and Wednesday, 6/4. These events will happen during the school day and will also be recorded and shared out after the performances.

Monday 6/2 from 2:25-3:20

On Monday, we will showcase our large ensembles including Middle School Band, Upper School Band, Upper School Music Elective, Middle School Choir, Middle School Keyboard/Strings Elective, and Middle School Rock Band.

Wednesday 6/4 from 1:25-2:20

On Wednesday, we will showcase solo and small ensemble works, visual arts students in Middle and Upper School, and the Middle School Rock Band Digital Music Projects. We will include work in the show that is ready to be performed - students, please check in with Dr. Sturrock or Dr. Crissman on your solo to see if it is prepared to the level needed to be included in the performance.

IB EXAMS Notice:

I was SO impressed by our students and their responsible use of the library during this past week. There were few distractions for our examining students, which is so greatly appreciated. Keep up the great work!
My office will be used as the examination room. This will be discussed in assembly, but it is VERY important that students are quiet when using the upper school library during exam times. This will provide the best environment for our students to demonstrate their knowledge on these culminating exams.

Dear Upper School Families,

We are wrapping up an exciting week, and jumping right into our IB examinations this week. Thank you so much to our CPA and parent volunteers for an awesome fiesta luncheon for Middle and Upper School students. Truly everyone looks forward to this, and the level of dedication to making this a community event is appreciated.

To our students, thank you for your hard work on Earth Day, and we hope that you had some fun as well. The 11th grade students that went off campus to help at ACLT received high praise for their work ethic at the Community Farm, and the staff at ACLT is so grateful to you for help. We hope to continue this partnership for years to come.

Additionally, students had the opportunity to decorate reusable grocery bags that were given to local farmers markets. We received the following note:

“Thank you very much for the Earth Day reusable tote bags for the farmers markets, they’re definitely appreciated. 60 were handed out today at the North Beach market and 45 will be handed out on Tuesday at the CalvertHealth market. The students’ creativity and talent is remarkable; I’m glad they are able to share their vision.”

Finally, a huge thank you to everyone involved with the Calverton Auction. This was an amazing event last night that exceeded our expectations. We were so honored to have Kaitlyn Croker there to perform, and even more thrilled that she spent Friday afternoon with aspiring musicians at Calverton to talk about her journey and the process she uses to create and share music.

Dear Upper School Families,

I hope that you are having a wonderful weekend as we are starting to see some warmer weather and maybe some sunshine! This past week our 10th grade took a trip to the Philip Merrill Environmental center, headquarters of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. It was a cold day, but the students remained engaged in exploring the Bay watershed, talking about ways to improve the health of the bay, investigating biodiversity by getting into the Bay (with waders on of course!), and exploring a green certified building and thinking about environmental engineering. I enjoyed getting to go on this trip with them, and look forward to the other grade level field trips coming up.

Dear Upper School families,

Welcome back to our final quarter of the 24/25 school year! In my experience, this is the time of year that just flies by between Field Day, Field Trips, and that final push in classes! I am so excited to spend spring with these students. Here is what you need to know as we begin 4th quarter.

Happening this week:

The AIMS visiting team is here! We have been working on our school accreditation for a year now, and the final pieces will be put into place this week as faculty and administration from other AIMS schools visit to help us visualize our next steps as a school.
3rd quarter Report cards will be available in FACTS the afternoon of Friday, April 4. This is a progress report, which means that the gradebook stays open and students still have an opportunity to make adjustments as needed before the end of the semester.

Dear Upper School Families,

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend and remembered to “spring forward”. I would like to take a moment to congratulate the cast and crew of The Addams Family on a fabulous opening weekend (just one assembly left to go). This was such a fun show that the audience loved! Thank you to Dr. Crissman, Dr. Sturrock, Mrs. Crissman, Mrs. Trott, and Mrs. Gallagher for their work in bringing this together.

Dear Upper School families,

February is flying by, and here we are in our last week. Students in grades 9-11 will start being pulled this week to discuss their schedule for next year, and Seniors will have a check-in to make sure they are on track for IB exams and June graduation! The next few weeks leading up to Spring Break will be busy!

Happening this Week:

February 24 – MS/US assemblies by Samantha Lord, Calverton Alumni.
1. Samantha recently published a book called “Finding Life’s Blessings: A Journey of Hardship, Healing, and Hope”. She will be sharing things she’s learned along the way and her experience writing.
February 25 – Winter Athletic Awards at 2pm in the theater.
February 25 – Calverton Parents Athletic Committee will host an Athlete Appreciation Event in the gym from 3:30 – 4:30pm. Please see attached flier. Thank you!

US Week of 2/10

Dear Upper School Families,

Happy Super Bowl Sunday to those that are watching! We are following this week for snow, and we will see if we are in for another winter wonderland. Just a heads up, we are hoping to send home work tomorrow just in case we are not in on Tuesday and Wednesday so that students may do some asynchronous learning. More details will be sent in the event of any cancellation. BUT, if we have a normal week, here is what you need to know:

Happening This Week:

Our celebration of Black History Month continues with a Kahoot! Game that has been created by our US Kaleidoscope club that will be played in advisory.
Wednesday, February 12: Maryland Environmental Services will do an “in-school” field trip with our environmental science classes.
Thursday, February 13: NHS Candy Grams delivered.
Friday, February 14: No School, winter break.

Scheduling for Next Year:

This past week, we had an upper school assembly discussing the classes that are offered in the IB program.
9th grade; while most 9th grade classes are set except for electives, we will meet with 9th grade students to make sure they are on track to meet their goals in the Calverton Upper School.
10th grade students will receive a form where they will rank which classes they are interested in for next year. We will use this as a starting point for meeting with students and families to discuss their schedule for next year.
11th grade students will mainly continue in year 2 of their selected IB courses, students will be called in for any changes or decisions that need to be made.

February 17: No school, winter break.
March 6 and 7: Save the Date for Addams Family the Musical at 6pm.

Thank you for those that were able to make it to Moving Up Night and/or to the IB information session. For those that could not make it, I am considering holding a second IB night on Zoom if there is interest. Please let me know if you have any questions.

February 3, to kickoff Black History Month, Kaleidoscope Club has put together an assembly presentation that will be shared with all divisions throughout the week. Stay tuned to Social Media and upcoming events for more on how we are recognizing Black History Month.

Friday, January 31, is a Half Day:

Upper school will dismiss at 12:20pm. There will be no lunch and no after school study hall this day.
- Busses will depart at 12:35pm
Please see the email from Adrienne Forgette, sent Saturday, January 25, for all the details.
The Blooms will be honoring the life of Carter Bloom this afternoon, and school will be closed so that any faculty/staff or families that would like to attend may.

These will be on sale at lunch through the NHS starting this week for delivery February 13.

Celebrate the Lunar New Year:

Dear Upper School families,

I hope everyone has stayed safe and warm over that past, what a wild way to start the year. It was wonderful to see students on Thursday and Friday, and they seemed happy to be back into a routine of sorts! Here are a few notes as we head into what will hopefully be a full week of school!

This Week:

We will be continuing with exams according to the original exam schedule. Unfortunately, due to the end of the semester on January 17, the subsequent 3-day weekend, the potential for more winter weather, and the Model UN trip, we are unable to move the exams. While the demonstration of information is important, what we have also found, is that starting longer mid-term exams in 9th grade has improved the ability of students to take the IB exams in their 11th and 12th grade years because they have experience sitting for an extended exam that we are unable to administer during a regular class period.
Teachers understand that our learning has been disrupted, and are taking this into account with the exam process. I encourage any student that has a particular concern to address the teacher directly to help alleviate those concerns.
January 14- 17, 2025, the upper school will be having midterms. Each day will have 2 subjects, and Friday, January 17 will be for make-up exams. Exam 1 will be from 8:30 - 11:30am, and exam 2 will be 12:20 - 3:20pm. Most exams will be 2 hours in length, but a 3 hour block is set aside for extended time, or longer IB style exams.
January 14: Exam 1 - English, Exam 2 - Math
January 15: Exam 1 - History/Ind and Soc, Exam 2 - Science 1
January 16: Exam 1 - World Language, Exam 2 - IB Visual Art/Music OR Science 2
January 17: Make-up exams OR additional subject.

IB Learner Profile - Caring:

We show empathy, compassion and respect. We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us.
During the months of November and December, advisories have been exploring this IB learner characteristic through our End Hunger Drive, Veteran's Day activities, and this week through an advisory service activity.
December 2 and 3 Students will have the opportunity to make “no sew blankets” for the Calvert Foster Care Closet, Project Echo and holiday cards for the Calvert Nursing Home during their Club time.

You are invited!:

Students will share music and art during two Winter Arts Showcases in December. Friday, December 13 will feature middle and upper school students in solo and small ensemble performances, and Monday, December 16 will feature music ensembles and visual art. Each event will take place during the school day at 2:30 in the theater, and parents are invited. We hope to see you there!

Model United Nations:

An email was sent out with deadlines and details for attending this conference in January. If you are interested in attending and did not receive this email on November 22, please let me know ASAP!

CAS Trip:

CAS stands for Creativity, Activity, and Service, and is the IB program for service learning.
Each year, students have taken a CAS trip, and this year, Ms. Trott has jumped in to organize, to keep the tradition alive!

Upcoming:

December 11, Upper School Sip n Dip. This fun event, hosted by the CPA, includes donuts, hot chocolate, and a chance to spend time with friends!
December 14-15, Robotics Competition (separate email will be sent our to those students involved)
December 20, Early Dismissal at 12:20pm. This half day, students will enjoy activities organized by the SGA and Advisory competitions, before heading out for winter break.

This Week:

On October 7, the Calverton Terrapin will arrive at school! This is our second year participating in Terrapins in the Classroom, which is a head start program for Diamondback Terrapins that are released back to their home on Poplar Island in the spring. This was a wonderful experience for the whole school last year and we look forward to more connections being made.

Tuesday, October 8, PSAT for grades 9 -11.

Tuesday, October 8, is our Dig Pink Volleyball Game!!! This game raises awareness for Breast Cancer and honors those that have fought this or any type of cancer. Students are invited to wear a Pink top with their uniform bottom this day. The Middle School Dig Pink Volleyball game will be at home at 4pm, followed by JV at 5:30pm.

Friday, October 11 and Monday, October 14, there is no school for students.

Spirit Week (students may wear school appropriate spirit wear or uniforms):

October 15 - Dress as Babies (while out lower school will be Senior Citizens!)
October 16 - Country vs Country Club (dress in your best western gear or dress to impress)
October 17 - Greek Life! (What does this mean to you? Grab your toga, or prep for college!)
October 18 - Class Colors, the school day will end in a Pep Rally October 18, after school schedule: 3:30 - 5:00pm Upper School for a Resfest Tailgate at the Residential Village. This is a fun time with food and games, and a great opportunity to build community. 5:30pm Girls Soccer Homecoming Game 7:30pm Boys Soccer Homecoming Game

Chic Fil A: This was a huge hit last week. Please remember to use this form and sign-up by 9am Tuesday and bring money by Wednesday morning.
