Introduction to Acrylic, June 15th - 19th

Ages: Rising 3rd-8th graders
Dates: Week 1, June 15th - June 19th
Hours: 12:30pm-4:00pm (PM session)
Fee: $160

Students will enjoy learning the basics of acrylic painting. All levels of experience are welcome. We will start the week practicing color mixing strategies. Students will explore different brush strokes and make a variety of textures. We will practice shading and blending clouds and water and finish with a magnificent mountain range.
Day 1 – Practice mixing and make color wheel
Day 2 – Practice with different types of brushes and experiment with different textures (clouds, water, blending)
Day 3 – geometric painting
Day 4 – Students chose a color scheme and start their abstract mountain scene

Day 5 – finish abstract mountain painting

Acrylic Painting, June 22nd - 26th

Ages: Rising 3rd-8th graders
Dates: Week 2, June 22nd - June 26th
Hours: 12:30pm-4:00pm (PM session)

In this session, students will continue to experiment with acrylic painting. Focus will be on skill-building and observation as we practice painting from pictures as well as still life. Students will have the opportunity to set up their own still life or choose a picture to paint. Students will complete the session with three beautiful paintings to take home.

 Day 1 – start demo and painting of happy llama

– finish happy llama and start still life
Day 3
– finish still life and start planning individual paintings (students can choose to do another still life or bring in a picture)

– start individual painting
Day 5
– finish individual painting

Intermediate Band Camp, June 22nd – June 26th

Ages: Rising 6th-8th graders
Dates: Week 2, June 22nd - June 26th
Hours: 8:30am - 12:00pm (AM session)
Fee: $150
This fun and exciting camp is designed for young musicians with previous experience in band. With rising 6th- 8th graders in mind, this camp will help your musician sharpen their skills as an individual and as a group player. All campers must have their own instrument and it needs to be in good working order. Curriculum will be out of the Standard of Excellence and Essential Elements band books, and a copy of each will be provided. At the end of the week, the campers will give individual and group performances, to which parents are welcome to attend.

Requirements for each camper:

· Working instrument

· Woodwind players must have at least 4 reeds and cork grease.

· Brass players must have slide cream and valve oil.

· Pencils with erasers and a blank notebook for assignments.

Intermediate Band camp will be taught by Mr. Jones, who has entered into his 2nd year as Calverton’s band director and his 16th year as a private instructor at the Garrett Music Academy. He specializes in woodwind and brass instruments.

A few of the artists Mr. Jones has opened for includes Earth Wind and Fire, The Temptations, New Edition, Sly and the Family Stone, Norman Connors and Jean Carn, Donald Byrd, Kool and the Gang just to name a few.

Mr. Jones studied jazz improvisation technique under Calvin Douglas Lampley (Peabody Conservatory), woodwind and classical studies under John Newsome (Howard University) and Melvin Miles (Morgan State University).

Horseback Riding at Patuxent Run Stables


Offered by Patuxent Run Stables, Prince Frederick, Maryland

Picture Gallery

Travel in our buses to and from Patuxent Run Stables where you will have a professional horseback riding lesson, learn about horse grooming and care, and observe onsite demonstrations from a competitive rider. Lead instructor, Savannah English, is available to speak with camp families about camper’s riding history and experiences to tailor individual lessons. Instructors have thorough and safe plans in place for all levels of experience.

Introduction to Watercolor, July 6th - 10th

Ages: Rising 3rd-8th graders
Dates: Week 4, July 6th - 10th
Hours: 12:30pm-4:00pm (PM session)

Let’s make some really fun watercolor art together! This is a basic introduction to watercolor painting. Students with no prior painting experience are welcome. We will spend our week becoming familiar with the basics of watercolor. You will learn how to mix colors on a paint palette, get comfortable using different brushes, and explore a variety of watercolor techniques.

Guitar Camp

Ages: 4th - 8th grade

Dates: Week 4, July 6-10
Hours: 8:30 am to 12:00 pm
Fee: $160

This is your chance to learn to play the guitar! Whether you are picking up guitar for the first time, or have been playing for years, this camp will help you develop your technique, reading, song writing and fingerpicking. We will learn songs in multiple genres, including pop, blues, folk, rock, and more.

Jonathan Crissman (jonathancrissman.com) has performed throughout the world, and is excited to help you be the best guitarist you can be. You can bring your own (acoustic) guitar, or use one of ours. Music and supplies will be included.

Improv Camp with Aly Cross

Ages: Rising 6th - 8th graders

Let's MAKE THINGS UP!!??

This Improv Theater Camp, led by The Polymath Place's Aly Cross, will have your sides splitting and your mind whirling. Campers will learn the simple basics of improvisational theater through games and fun exercises. Much like the TV show, Whose Line Is It Anyway?.....we'll be playing popular games such as "Scenes From A Hat", "Party Quirks" and "Co-workers". No previous theater experience is necessary; just a flare for the funny and the desire to make things up as we GOOOOOO!!!!

Week 5 – Watercolor Painting

This session will continue our exploration of watercolor painting. Students will continue practicing watercolor techniques, but students who did not attend week 1 are still welcome! We will continue to practice watercolor techniques starting with a delicious summer treat, watermelon. Then continue with a still life that each student will paint from a different angle in the classroom. The last painting will be up to your student’s creativity.

Day 1 – We will start the watermelon demo and painting.

Day 2- Students will paint a still life.

Day 3- finish still life and students will start planning their individual painting either they can create another still life or bring in a picture

Day 4- start individual painting

Day 5 – finish individual painting

Broadway Theater at Calverton-Production of Shrek the Musical JR!

Ages: 8 to 14 years old
Dates: Weeks 6 and 7, July 20-31
Hours: 8:30 am to 4:00 pm (AM/PM session)
Fee: $450 for 2-week camp

Performances: Thursday July 30 at 1:30pm and 6:30 pm

Production of: Shrek the Musical JR.

It's a "big bright beautiful world" as everyone's favorite ogre, Shrek, leads a cast of fairytale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance. This summer, campers will become a cast of heroes and misfits like Pinochio, Three Pigs, Gingy, Peter Pan, a gospel singing dragon, and many many more! When Shrek sets off with a wisecracking donkey to confront Farquaad, he's handed a task — rescue the feisty princess Fiona, and his swamp will be his again. There's a part for everyone in this dazzling adventure story. Campers will rotate through singing, dancing, and acting rehearsals, production crews like costumes, sets and publicity, and learn about how to work together to produce a show in two weeks. The last Friday will include our camper cabaret, back by popular demand!

Campers must be available for the performances the day and evening of July 30.

Beginning Band Camp, August 3rd – August 7th

Ages: Rising 4th-6th graders
Dates: Week 8, August 3rd - August 7th
Hours: 8:30am - 12:00pm (AM session)
Fee: $150

If your child is getting ready to begin band classes in the fall, this is the perfect camp to get them started! Give them the advantage of an extra week of instruction to jump start their learning before school starts. This camp is specifically designed for rising 4th-6th graders who have never played an instrument before. All campers must have their own instrument and it needs to be in good working order. Curriculum will be out of the Standard of Excellence and Essential Elements band books, and a copy of each will be provided. At the end of the week, the campers will give individual and group performances, to which parents are welcome to attend.

Kindergarten Kick-Off

Ages: 5-6
Dates: Week 8, August 3-7
Hours: 8:30 am to 4:00pm

Participate in camp with Mrs. Bottles in our kindergarten classroom and get ready for the school year! With story time, games, arts and crafts, and water fun designed specifically for upcoming kindergartners! This is a great way for your child to socialize and transition to the big time – KINDERGARTEN!!! Please bring a snack, bag lunch, water bottle, change of clothes, towel and sunscreen each day. Please make sure to label all of your child's belongings with their name.
